OvGU blocks Opera Square – Report

Every year in January, the so-called “Funeral March” takes place, on the occasion of the bombing of Magdeburg in World War II. A day that neo-Nazis and fascists use to reinterpret history and spread their inhuman ideology. Not with us! We from Queer Campus have clearly spoken out against this and organized a meeting on Opernplatz. Because the university is a place of tolerance, acceptance, cosmopolitanism and humanity and it offers no place for fascism and neo-Nazism. Such values have no place in our unit either and they will not get past us!

To prepare for this special day, we organized a number of flyers, information brochures and stickers in advance. The plan was to set up a stand where the materials would be displayed so that interested people passing by could get information and talk to us. In addition, we equipped the stand with banners that we had made a few days earlier with slogans such as “Respect pronouns, not nazis”, “Bill Gates doesn’t chip you. You are not that special” and “The rainbow remains colorful! Solidarity against fascism”.

Overall, the meeting was very calm and there were no problems. A few passers-by came by, but the majority of people, like the “funeral march” and all counter-demos and counter-rallies rather stayed in other parts of the city. We ended the gathering early and some of us joined the counter-demos of other groups and organizations afterwards. During the evaluation of the event, we realized that we would have found it more useful to break up after a certain time and join counter-demos or to join a counter-demo unitedly from the beginning, but these considerations will be continued only next year. Even if the number of visitors was not high, we felt it was right and important that we have carried out the action – because so we have set a sign together against fascism and neo-Nazism.
